WPS and HAS Oilfield Surfactants Made by SO₃ Falling Film Sulfonation

Petroleum sulfonate is an anionic surfactant produced from petroleum distillate or suitable petroleum fractions. In ZJS technology, the raw material is sulfonated with sulfur trioxide in a falling film sulfonator, followed by controlled neutralization and downstream processing to obtain petroleum sulfonate products for oilfield and industrial applications.

Weighted petroleum sulfonate (WPS) is mainly used as an enhanced oil recovery chemical. When combined with alkali and polymer in a three-component oil displacement system, petroleum sulfonate can help reduce oil-water interfacial tension and improve the separation and mobilization of crude oil attached to reservoir rock.

Heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (HAS) can be produced from heavy alkylbenzene and used in enhanced oil recovery, lubricant additives and related industrial fields. ZJS provides process development, raw material formulation support, sulfonation plant design, key equipment manufacturing and commissioning services for WPS/HAS production.

Petroleum Sulfonate Process Flow

The WPS/HAS process begins with petroleum distillate or heavy alkylbenzene raw material and sulfur trioxide. After SO₃ falling film sulfonation, the sulfonated intermediate is neutralized and processed into petroleum sulfonate products. Tail gas treatment and by-product handling are integrated into the process to support stable and safer plant operation.

How Petroleum Sulfonate Supports Enhanced Oil Recovery

Chemical enhanced oil recovery uses surfactants to reduce interfacial tension between crude oil and water, helping mobilize residual oil that remains after primary and secondary recovery. Petroleum sulfonate can be formulated with alkali and polymer in an ASP system. The surfactant helps lower oil-water interfacial tension, while alkali and polymer contribute to system performance depending on reservoir conditions, crude oil properties and injection strategy.
